Materials: Simple, classroom-safe building materials

1. Discover the built environment

Students begin by identifying the structures and systems they use every day. They consider how buildings affect comfort, safety, transportation, education, health, and opportunity.

2. Learn construction science

A short, accessible lesson introduces concepts such as structure, loads, stability, insulation, ventilation, water management, material selection, accessibility, and sustainability.

3. Complete a sustainable-building challenge

Working in small teams, students design and construct a model shelter that responds to heat and rain while meeting specific size, stability, accessibility, and material-use requirements.

4. Test and improve their designs

Students evaluate their models, identify weaknesses, and make evidence-based improvements. The focus is not on creating the prettiest structure—it is on explaining how and why the design works.

5. Explore construction careers

Students learn how architects, engineers, contractors, tradespeople, sustainability professionals, estimators, project managers, building inspectors, and other specialists work together.

6. Build English-Spanish vocabulary

Students practice important terms used throughout the program, connecting technical learning with bilingual communication.

7. Reflect on their learning

A brief pre- and post-program survey helps students recognize what they learned and whether their interest in construction-related careers changed.
